Zion

4yr old Male Husky Mix

Meet Zion! This gorgeous guy is looking for his true forever home this time – he was adopted over a year ago and sadly returned after his humans went through a divorce. He originally came to us from Clovis, NM from a high kill shelter. He was very timid when we first took him in, but has come really far over the last 1.5yrs and is a very well-adjusted, friendly boy now!

He warms up pretty quickly now and is very friendly and cuddly with his people once he gets to know them. He does suffer from some separation anxiety when he is totally alone (no other pets) or in a brand new place, so his ideal home would be one where he does not spend too much time by himself. He has the perfect energy level – he’s happy to relax and chill with his pack, but also happy to jump up and play with everyone else.

He is super smart and can open doors and jump 6ft block wall fencing if he panics enough from being left alone. He had never jumped a 5ft wall in his past adopters home and also hasn’t jumped the fence in his current foster home, but while with a new foster for a weekend trip he did panic and escape over a 6ft block wall. We don’t think this excludes adopters with 6ft block fencing, but we think his adopter will have to be aware of this and not leave him outside unattended until he adjusts and realizes he is safe in his new home. He has shown historically that his home is his safe space and once he knows this, he won’t try to get out.

He does great with other dogs – to a point where we actually feel that he needs other dogs in his adoptive home. Being with other dogs really seems to help him with his separation anxiety when his humans leaves the house. He hasn’t had any aggression issues but is very playful, and a husky, so very small dogs that aren’t comfortable with that level of play may not be a good fit.

His fosters do not kennel him when they leave the home and have said he is not destructive – the only time they discovered he can open doors is when both other dogs needed to be brought somewhere without him, and he was able to open 3 doors and had just opened the last one when they got home! He definitely always wants to be with his pack.

His foster also reports he is a velcro dog at home now and is always following her around and laying at her feet or leaning against her on the couch. He even loves to be brushed! She says he is a “literal dream rescue dog” and that whoever brings him home is going to be so lucky.

We are not recommending him to a home with very small children, but older kids who are dog-smart would likely be ok.
