We took in a litter of 7 puppies, estimated to be 5-6 weeks old, who were found around the Utah / Arizona border without their mother. They were not doing well health-wise and we feared Parvo may be a culprit (vomiting, not keeping food down, blood in poo) – with lots of care and help from others, and a trip to our vet to do a test, they came back negative for Parvo and seem to be on the mend! We have been doing IV fluids, feeding meat baby foods and milk replacement powder, and monitoring closely. These things can be so difficult to fight when they are so young and fragile! With how they have done the last two days we really think everyone is going to make it now though
Our first fecal came back negative but our second, which had a more advanced panel, came back positive for canine coronavirus! This is NOT the same thing as the respiratory coronavirus currently effecting humans, and has been around for years and years – first discovered in 1971. It only effects the digestive track and in dogs is usually not super serious, except in the case of babies like these (around 2lbs when we got them) whose immune systems aren’t read to fight it yet. So longterm prognosis for these guys is great!!!
