Dobby

Dobby was found as a stray on 12/19 – he could not walk well and the county shelter immediately saw he was in pain. They took some X-rays, and those showed an incredibly severe break – his forearm bones were both completely broken, and were twisted and overlapping. The only way to allow him to keep this leg was to seek surgery with a specialist. Thanks to our generous community, we were able to get Dobby into a specialist on 12/27 to have surgery to repair his leg.
Dobby spent 4 DAYS with his injured broken leg on the cold shelter floor in a noisy and scary environment. Once the doctor actually got in there he said he believed that this injury actually had occurred between 2-3 weeks prior to his operation (determined by how far along his body had attempted to heal the bone and tissue at that distorted angle) – meaning he likely lived with it broken without even pain medication for at least a week before arriving at the shelter. This poor boy, it breaks our hearts he suffered like that – we will make sure there are only good things to come for him!
Despite all of this, he is just the BEST boy, so so sweet, loves scratches and pets and affection and will lean in for more. He has shown absolutely no aggression towards humans, and with as much pain as he has been in, that is truly amazing! He wants to be so independent and has insisted on walking as much as he can – we convinced him to at least let himself be carried up and down stairs at first, but otherwise he wants to be on his feet. He has been perfectly potty-trained in his foster home and has learned how to use the dog door – a little difficult with his cone, but he makes it work!
His healing has gone really great so far, and we can truly see a difference in his behaviors now that he is starting to feel like himself again. He has relaxed a ton around other dogs, become more spunky and playful (despite our best efforts to keep him as calm as we can for healing!) – we think he would do great in a home with another dog, or several, once he is completely healed. He seems to want to play with the others, so in the long run we would love to let him do that. He did show some resource guarding with his food with the other dogs initially, but this has completely disappeared over the last few weeks. He will likely have an adjustment period once he gets into his own home, but it will be well worth it in the end as he gets comfortable and becomes such an amazing, loving boy!
He has not been tested with cats or very small children, so we are recommending either an adult-only home, or a home with older children at this time.
