Steele
~2yr old male Siberian Husky mix
Steele came to us from the Maricopa County euthanasia list after showing resource-guarding tendencies in the shelter. Resource-guarding is a common issue, but unfortunately in Steele’s case, it resulted in a bite. When behavioral issues are not handled correctly, this does happen. Steele is NOT by any means a dog who wants to hurt people, at all. Resource-guarding can be a very manageable AND very trainable issue in fact many dogs with these behavioral issues can turn into the absolute most rewarding of pets once trained because not only do they learn what is expected of them, but they now have developed such a bond with the person who decided that they were worth it! This is our hope for Steele.
Steele does well with other dogs (he has 3 in his foster home with him now!) and can be playful when he’s in the mood, but can also enjoy some of his own space too – he lets the other dogs when he needs space by grumbling and is very communicative of his needs. As another bonus, Steele also is cat-friendly! He currently lives with a kitty in his foster home, though we would want to do an intro with other pets in the home for a possible adopter before finalizing.
Although Steele does well with all of these other pets, he absolutely LOVES to be in the same room as his people and come up for kisses. He comes when called and loves to follow his people around the home. Steele is very communicative once he gets to know you – he often will use silly grumbling sounds to communicate, that aren’t really a growl, but are trying to tell you what he’s thinking. He is very good about letting you know when he wants attention, as well as when he needs space; he needs an adopter who is understanding and patient and good at reading animals.
His new home must be prepared to go very slowly at first – he takes some time to transition and get comfortable. The best way to do this is to not be too overbearing with attention, and let him come up to you when he is ready! His adopters must also be aware of moving too quickly around him at first and of touching bones / food bowls when he is nearby. Over time Steele opened up amazingly in to his fosters after leaving the shelter, so we just know that the right home is out there for him!
Steele has so much potential and just needs someone to help him become more trusting of people, because he REALLY does want to love on them!
