Odyn
~3-4yr old male Siberian Husky
Meet Odyn! This stunning agouti husky boy landed on the euthanasia list at our county shelter here in Phoenix. He is overall a great dog: very sweet and affectionate with humans, loves to be pet and get head scratches, and will come snuggle on the couch (if you invite him first!). He hasn’t shown any destructive tendencies when left out un-kenneled, and knows to use a dog door (not to say he would need one though). He LOVES other dogs and will engage in rough play when instigated, or gentler play, depending on the dog. He hasn’t shown any issues at all with other dogs, even a 4-month old puppy, so we feel he would likely do well with dogs of all other sizes – though a meet and greet is a must before any adoption!
Odyn has not been around cats, though given his temperament towards dogs, we would consider setting up a cat-test for the right adopter if everything else looks like the perfect fit for Odyn.
Odyn is also VERY talkactive – sometimes dare we say, even a little TOO talkative! There are quite a few other dogs in his foster home, so this may be contributing to his extraordinary chattiness, but we definitely want any adopter to be aware that he is much more on the vocal side. He both barks (as much as a husky does, anyway), and gives woos of different volumes conversationally. He also knows how to sit and shake, and will sit at attention perfectly when it’s time to eat.
Now for the one negative with Odyn, the thing that landed him on the euthanasia list. He does resource guard. For someone who has experience with resource-guarding, the level that he does it will seem very mild – he does not guard even on a daily basis, and he does just fine accepting treats. If he gets a high-value item like a pig ear, you can walk by him while he is chewing it without him even raising a lip – he will only growl and act defensive if you motion towards him showing that you are going to try to take it. He can also be distracted away from items relatively easily. He doesn’t mind another dog sitting 2ft away watching him eat either. It really is one of the most manageable cases of resource-guarding that we have had come along – but it is still resource-guarding, and if an adopter does not have experience or understand this behavior, it can be very very easy to escalate this to a point where Odyn will bite. He has a bite record with county from getting ahold of a high value item out of the trash and being cornered with it in a kennel by an owner who clearly did not understand the best way to handle a situation like this. Cornering a dog that is guarding something is the worst thing that you can do. Odyn has absolutely no desire to harm someone, and with proper training, he would continue to make HUGE progress, though as-is he would raise absolutely no issues with an experienced adopter who already understands this behavior.
Because of his bite history, Odyn must go to a home with no children.
Please fill out an application if you want to meet this goofy, lovable boy!
