Misto is a 5-year-old boy who was rescued from the e-list after arriving at the shelter with painful, ulcerated sores that needed surgery. Despite being scared and uncomfortable, he was incredibly sweet with the new people he met and quickly accepted pets and affection. He needed to get out of the shelter so he could begin the medical care he needed, but his journey to recovery ended up taking longer than expected. He was diagnosed with Valley Fever and started treatment, which delayed his surgery. Then, time spent in boarding caused so much anxiety that he injured himself further and faced even more delays. Thankfully, Misto has now had his surgery and has healed up so well!
Once Misto has some time to settle in, he’s a pretty easygoing guy. He’s medium energy, has no destructive behaviors, and responds very well to verbal correction and redirection. If he hears a firm “no,” he takes the hint and will even retreat to his crate to settle himself. He’s shown that he is comfortable in a crate but also doesn’t need to be crated when left alone. He loves going for walks, walks nicely with minimal pulling, and doesn’t react to other dogs or animals he passes. He’s also been doing well around other dogs in his foster homes and has shown that he’s comfortable sharing his space with them. Misto does have a tendency to mark corners in the home (but only when you leave him home alone!), so his family will need to be prepared to continue working on that behavior. He’s friendly, affectionate, and has shown no aggression toward people or other animals. If you’re lucky, Misto may reward you with one of his favorite things: kisses!
Misto would do well in a variety of homes, whether that’s a young active household, a retired couple, or a family household. Kids ages 7+ would be recommended, and another dog could be a great fit. Cats, however, are not recommended—when introduced to cats, Misto was far too excited about them. Most importantly, his forever family needs to be patient with his continued healing and willing to give him the stability and care he deserves. After everything sweet Misto has been through, he’s ready for life to be filled with walks, kisses, and a family of his own.
