Lewis comes to us from Clovis, New Mexico – this area is pretty remote and has a very high kill rate in shelters, so we have been working to help out with some of their husky intakes in the last few months. Due to being a stray, Lewis has had a hard time learning how to settle and relax in a new home environment, but has been making great progress with his foster. He also didn’t seem to have any interest in dog food initially, only human food. He also didn’t know the basics of being a pet or companion in a home. From the moment he walked in the door, he was excited to meet all of the humans in his foster home and is very sweet. He has an amazing personality, no aggression issues and is very lovable. He is also very good with all other dogs, great at traveling in a vehicle, great in stores, loves meeting people, pretty good with traffic noise – he is still working on crate training and is learning to hear everyday household noises – loud sudden noises do bother him but he is making progress.
He would do great in a home with another dog or two, though we don’t feel he absolutely needs another dog companion. Having frequent human company is vital, as he needs to know that someone will be with him everyday. His foster has been home with him nearly 24/7 since he arrived in Arizona and says his progress has been amazing. All he wants is to be loved and shown affection in a safe home. He in turn will give you all his love, play and be your companion. Like most Huskies, daily exercise will keep him happy, at the moment, most days he goes to the park twice a day. He likes to sleep next to you when he gets home and is very happy. He is very intelligent and strong, with some training he will be an amazing companion pet.
He has no issues with children but due to manners we usually recommend older children for huskies! He was briefly tested with cats in New Mexico before coming to us, and his foster there stated that he avoided them and actually seemed to be scared of them and showed no aggression! So it’s possible he may be able to be adopted to an experienced how with cats that can provide a safe introduction and environment.
