Aiko
~7-8-month old male Siberian Husky
Aiko joined us recently from the AZ Humane. He was found as a dirty, neglected stray. He is VERY under-socialized and skittish (at first)! We estimate he is only 7-8 months old, and was just 30lbs when we went into the vet. His coat is a total mess – matted, debris, and was covered in fleas and ticks.
When he first was joined us, he would pancake, panic, and bite flailingly at hands that tried to pick him up or help him move where he needed to go – COMPLETELY out of a fear-based response and definitely with no intention to aggressively hurt anyone. He would not willingly come up to humans, but seemed to really enjoy the company of other dogs. Less than a week after we got him, he unfortunately got very sick and needed to be hospitalized – we were worried he potentially had distemper, so we took extra precautions. Thankfully with hospitalization, fluids, and antibiotics, he is on the mend now, and his distemper test was negative!
In the few weeks he has been in a foster home, he has opened up SO much! He refused to come inside even to sleep at night at first (there is a doggie door for free access) – finally when the weather got very cold, he relented and started to explore the inside…. and realized it’s actually pretty nice in here! He spends more time inside than out now! He will come up to a human for treats, and doesn’t retreat in fear when it’s time for dinner anymore (he doesn’t approach either, but he will stay still and wait for his food – he does love to eat!).
Even though he is a little shy about approaching people…. he is NOT shy about telling you how he feels!! He has the most adorable little jabbering husky voice and loves to tell you how he feels, from a distance of course. With coaxing, treats, patience, and interaction with other dogs in a home environment, he has really started to come out of his shell.
We do plan to do one more blood test on him after he finishes his course of antibiotics just to ensure he is 100% healthy, but outside of this he is ready to go to a foster-to-adopt home that understands under-socialized dogs and the level of patience that will be needed for him as he grows. He very much is still a puppy and has SO much potential!
